How it works

From order to a live website

  1. 1

    Buy the add-on

One-time price. Your download link and licence key arrive by email and in My Account.

  2. 2

    Drop it in

Upload the folder to addons/, restart the app and enable it in the admin.

  3. 3

    Rates update daily

The first visit after 24 hours updates your enabled currencies; Admin → Currencies shows when each rate was fetched.

What it does

Updates the exchange rates of the currencies enabled in Code Craft Store: Django Ecommerce once a day from a free exchange-rate API (open.er-api.com, or Frankfurter with ECB rates). It runs on the first store visit after 24 hours, so no cron job is needed, and python manage.py update_currency_rates runs it on demand. You can add a margin percentage and keep chosen currencies manual. If the fetch fails, your manual rates stay unchanged. It was tested against mocked API responses only.

  • Daily update, no cron job needed
  • open.er-api.com or Frankfurter (ECB)
  • Margin % to cover conversion fees
  • Keep chosen currencies manual

Requires Code Craft Store for Django

This is an add-on for Code Craft Store: Django Ecommerce, sold separately. Upload its folder to the store's addons/ folder, restart the app and configure it in Admin → Add-ons; no code changes needed. Each add-on has its own licence key.

  • Works with Code Craft Store for Django 1.0 or later
  • Installed in minutes on cPanel Python App or a VPS
  • Its own settings card in the admin

Who needs it

It is for shops running Code Craft Store: Django Ecommerce that show prices in several currencies and would rather not type new exchange rates by hand. The store converts prices for display with the rate saved for each currency, and every order keeps the currency and rate that were used; this add-on keeps those rates current. It needs no account and no API key, only outgoing internet access from your server to the rates source.

  • For stores with two or more currencies
  • No API key or sign-up
  • Server must allow outgoing HTTPS requests

Settings in your admin

Upload the auto-currency-rates folder to addons/, restart the app and open Admin → Add-ons → Auto Currency Rates. Choose the rate source: open.er-api.com (the default) or Frankfurter with European Central Bank rates. Add a margin percentage if you want foreign prices slightly higher than the published rate, for example 2 to cover card conversion fees, and list the currency codes to keep manual; those are never overwritten. The add-on's card shows when the last automatic update ran and the command for updating from the server.

  • Two free sources
  • Margin percentage
  • Currencies to keep manual
  • Last update time on the add-on card

How the update runs

On storefront page views the add-on checks when it last ran; once 24 hours have passed, it notes the time first and then fetches the rates for your base currency, so a slow or failing source is tried once a day rather than on every visit. Only currencies that are enabled, not the base and not on your manual list are updated, and each one gets an update time that shows in Admin → Currencies. You can also run python manage.py update_currency_rates from SSH or a cron job.

  • No cron job needed
  • python manage.py update_currency_rates
  • Only enabled currencies change

Honest limits

A fetched rate replaces the stored rate of that currency, so put a currency on the manual list if you want to keep setting it yourself. When the fetch fails, your current rates stay as they are. The rates are reference rates for showing prices, not what a payment gateway or bank charges. It was tested only against simulated API responses: an update with margin and skip list, a failed fetch keeping the manual rates, and the once-a-day run on a visit.

  • Failed fetch: rates unchanged
  • Reference rates for display
  • Simulated responses only

Working with your currency list

The add-on does not create currencies. You still add each one in Admin → Currencies with its symbol, decimals and symbol position, and decide which ones visitors can choose. After an update the new rate and its update time appear in that list. Orders placed earlier keep the rate they were placed at, so a rate change never alters past orders, their totals or their invoices. Prices in your catalogue stay in your base currency; only the conversion for display changes.

  • You decide which currencies exist
  • Past orders keep their rate
  • Catalogue prices stay in the base currency
