70% of carts are abandoned — but a third of those customers were genuinely interested. The capture setup, timing and email sequence that consistently recovers revenue.
Seven out of ten carts on a typical store are abandoned. The instinct is to treat that as lost demand — but our recovery campaigns consistently win back 10–20% of abandoned revenue, because a large share of abandoners were interrupted, comparison-shopping, or ambushed by shipping costs. They wanted the thing. They just need a good reason to come back.
Capture more carts than checkout gives you
You can only email carts you captured. Native checkout only identifies logged-in users — serious recovery needs guest capture: grab the email the moment it's typed into checkout, and consider an earlier pre-capture prompt (exit-intent or add-to-cart email gate with an incentive). Our Abandoned Cart Recovery plugin does both, marking the cart abandoned after a window you set.
The sequence that works
Email 1, one hour in: pure reminder — their items, photos, one-click restore link, zero discount. This alone recovers the interrupted. Email 2, 24 hours: handle objections — shipping clarity, guarantee, reviews of the items in their cart. Email 3, 72 hours: the incentive, if you use one — a unique, expiring coupon (auto-expiry creates honest urgency; unique codes stop coupon-site leakage).
The one-click restore link is non-negotiable
Every recovery email must rebuild the exact cart with the coupon pre-applied. Any friction — logging in, re-finding products — and the recovery dies. This is the single most important technical detail in the whole flow.
What to measure
Recovery rate (recovered ÷ abandoned, aim 10–20%), revenue per recovery email (usually your highest-earning email type per send), and coupon leakage. Watch serial abandoners who've learned discounts arrive on day three — cap incentive frequency per customer.
Set up once, earns forever: cart recovery is the closest thing ecommerce has to passive income. The full setup takes an afternoon with the right plugin — or we'll configure the sequence, copy and timing for you.
