Why Your Google Ads Lose Money (And How to Fix It)

Code Craft MarketingPaid Media·July 30, 2026·10 min read

Most underperforming ad accounts fail for the same three reasons — broken tracking, weak landing pages, and no testing cadence. Here's how we diagnose and fix each one.

"We tried Google Ads and lost money." We hear it almost every week from businesses that came to us after a bad run. The frustrating part is that the money rarely disappears for mysterious reasons. Nine times out of ten it's one of three fixable problems — and usually all three at once. Here's how we diagnose an account that's bleeding budget, and what we do about each cause.

Problem one: your tracking is lying to you

Before touching bids or keywords, we check whether the account can even see the truth. A surprising number of accounts optimise toward the wrong thing because their conversion tracking is broken, double-counting, or firing on the wrong event. If Google thinks a page view is a sale, its algorithm will happily spend your budget chasing page views.

The fix is unglamorous but decisive: rebuild tracking properly, ideally server-side, so attribution survives ad blockers and browser privacy changes. We verify that one real purchase produces exactly one conversion, that the value passed matches the actual order, and that offline conversions feed back where they matter. Only once the numbers are trustworthy do budget decisions mean anything. This is why our PPC service sets up clean tracking before spend ever ramps.

Problem two: the ad works, the page doesn't

A click is a promise. If someone searches for a specific product or service, clicks your ad, and lands on a generic homepage, you've broken that promise and paid for the privilege. The ad did its job. The page threw the money away.

Most agencies stop at the ad and hand you the landing page problem. We think that's backwards, because the page is usually where the return is won or lost. A good campaign page matches the promise of the ad, states the offer in the first screen, removes navigation that leaks attention, and asks for one clear action. In our experience, fixing the destination page moves cost-per-lead further than another round of keyword tweaking ever will.

Problem three: you set it and forgot it

Ad accounts decay. Winning creative goes stale as your audience sees it too often, competitors shift their bids, and search behaviour drifts. An account that was profitable in month one can quietly slide into loss by month four with nobody touching it. Paid media is not a slow cooker.

The counter is a testing cadence — a steady pipeline of new angles, hooks and formats, with clear rules for what gets scaled and what gets cut. We're not testing for the sake of activity; we're always trying to beat the current best performer so the account improves instead of eroding. This is the same discipline that keeps social media campaigns from going flat, and it's the part most struggling accounts are missing entirely.

What a realistic timeline looks like

Here's the honest part. Traffic is immediate the day you switch on, but efficient, profitable results typically take four to eight weeks of optimisation as data accumulates and tests conclude. Anyone promising instant profitability is either lucky or lying. We'd rather set the expectation correctly and then beat it than sell you a fantasy that sours the relationship by week three.

The budget question, answered plainly

You need enough spend to gather meaningful data. In most niches that means at least $1,000 to $1,500 a month in ad spend, with the management fee separate and flat — never a hidden percentage buried in your account. Below that threshold, the algorithm never learns enough to optimise, and honestly, another channel like SEO or good content may serve you better. We'll tell you if that's the case rather than take a campaign we don't believe in.

If your account is losing money right now, it's almost certainly one of these three causes, and all three are fixable. If you'd like a second pair of eyes, we offer a straight audit — we'll tell you what's broken and whether we think paid ads are even the right channel for you. No jargon, no pressure.
