GEO Explained: Getting Cited by ChatGPT and AI Search

Code Craft SEO TeamSEO & GEO Strategists·August 17, 2026·9 min read

AI engines now answer millions of buying questions with specific brand names. GEO is how you become one of them — what it is, how it differs from SEO, and where to start.

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity to recommend a product, a tool or a supplier, and it answers with specific names. Some brands surface again and again; most never appear at all. That difference is rarely luck — it's structure, and it's optimisable. The practice is called GEO: Generative Engine Optimisation. This guide explains what it is, why it's not the same as SEO, and how to start being the answer rather than watching a competitor be it.

What GEO actually is

GEO is earning visibility inside AI-generated answers the way SEO earns it inside classic search results. When an AI engine composes a recommendation, it draws on a handful of sources it can find, trust and extract cleanly — and cites some of them. GEO is the work of making your brand one of those sources: clearly structured, consistently described, and present on the platforms these engines pull from. It's a new front page of search, and almost none of your competitors are optimising for it yet.

How AI engines choose who to cite

AI answers lean on three things. First, how prominent your brand already is in the data the model was trained on — hard to change quickly. Second, what the engine retrieves when it searches the live web to answer a question — very changeable, because most engines read what currently ranks. Third, whether your page states facts a model can lift cleanly — a crisp, standalone sentence with a real fact in it is far more quotable than a paragraph of vibes. SEO gets you retrieved; GEO gets you understood and quoted.

Why GEO is not just SEO with a new name

Strong SEO is the foundation GEO builds on — the two are converging, not competing. But GEO adds layers SEO doesn't emphasise. It cares intensely about answer-shaped writing: leading with a complete answer, defining terms explicitly, keeping one idea per paragraph so a model can extract a clean claim. It leans harder on entities and structured data, so engines can anchor your brand unambiguously in their knowledge graphs. And it targets a different link list — the forums, comparison posts and 'best X for Y' sources that AI engines quote constantly. For the full playbook, our practical GEO guide goes deep on each.

The content moves that get you cited

The single highest-leverage change is restructuring content so an LLM can extract and trust it. Answer the core question in the first 150 words, then expand. Use question-form headings. Define things plainly — 'X is…'. Include concrete numbers and honest comparisons. Keep each paragraph to one idea. None of this hurts your human readers, which is the point: you're engineering the same content for two audiences at once, not writing twice. Our GEO service and our SEO service run this as one connected effort for exactly that reason.

Entities, schema and consistency

AI engines anchor brands in knowledge graphs, and inconsistency dilutes you into invisibility. Make your brand unambiguous: the same name and description everywhere, Organization and Product or Service schema on the relevant pages, a real About page, and authors with genuine credentials. This overlaps heavily with technical SEO, which is one more reason GEO and classic search reward the same underlying discipline rather than pulling you in two directions.

Measuring something most analytics miss

The catch with GEO is that standard analytics barely see it. You measure it by sampling your key buying prompts across engines on a schedule and logging whether you appear, at what position versus competitors, and with what sentiment — plus watching referral patterns and branded-search lift, since people often see you in an AI answer and then search your name. That second-order effect is usually the first visible win. Our All-in-One SEO plugin's AI Visibility module automates exactly this sampling so you get a visibility trendline instead of guesswork.

GEO isn't a replacement for SEO — it's its next layer, and the compounding kind, because early citations tend to stick as engines keep drawing from sources that already worked. The gap between first movers and everyone else widens monthly, which is the whole argument for starting now while your market is still invisible to the engines their customers are already asking.
