Hallmark & pricing, explained
What to check before you buy gold, and how every line on your bill is worked out.
The BIS hallmark
Hallmarking is certification of gold purity by a BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centre. A hallmarked piece carries three marks:
- The BIS standard mark (a triangle logo)
- The purity grade, for example 22K916, 18K750 or 14K585
- A 6-character alphanumeric HUID code unique to that piece
You can check a piece's HUID yourself using the "Verify HUID" option in the official BIS CARE app. We are happy to show you how at the counter.
BIS registration details: [your BIS registration number]. HUID codes are printed on the piece and on your bill; we never show sample HUIDs online.
How the price of gold jewellery is worked out
Weight
Net gold weight in grams, weighed in front of you.
Day's rate
The rate for that purity on the day you buy.
Making charges
Per gram or a percentage, depending on the design.
Stones & GST
Stone charges if any, then GST as applicable (currently 3% on jewellery).
Old gold exchange
- Old jewellery is tested for purity in front of you
- The value is worked out on the day's rate and the tested purity
- Use it against new jewellery, or ask about our buy-back terms
- Bring a photo ID; the original bill helps if you have it
Diamonds and silver
Diamond jewellery is sold with a certificate from an independent laboratory where stated on the tag. Silver jewellery and articles are priced by weight or by piece, as shown on the tag.
