About

About me

Your City-born, newspaper-trained, and happiest with a fountain pen and a long afternoon.

My story

From the news desk to novels.

I grew up in a big, noisy house near Your City, the youngest of eleven cousins. Stories were how we argued, apologised and remembered.

For ten years I worked nights as a newspaper sub-editor, fixing other people's sentences. I wrote my first stories on the bus home. Salt and Kewra, my first book, came out of those notebooks.

Today I write full time from a small study full of index cards, and I spend weekends at bookshops, schools and book clubs.

How I write

From an idea to a finished book

  1. Walk and listen

Every book starts with a place and a voice I can't stop hearing.

  2. Index cards

Scenes go on cards, pinned to the wall until the shape appears.

  3. Four drafts

The first is for me. The fourth is for you.

  4. Readers first

A few trusted readers see it before my editor does.
