How to Get an EIN as a Non-US Resident (2026 Guide)

Get an EIN as a non-US resident

If you’ve formed a US LLC from abroad, the next thing you need is an EIN — your business tax ID. The good news: you can get one without a US Social Security Number. Here’s exactly how non-residents do it in 2026.

What is an EIN?

An EIN (Employer Identification Number) is a 9-digit federal tax ID issued by the IRS to businesses. Think of it as your company’s tax number. You’ll need it to:

  • Open a US business bank account.
  • Work with payment processors (Stripe, PayPal) and marketplaces (Amazon).
  • Hire employees or contractors.
  • File your US business taxes.

Can you get one without an SSN?

Yes. The online EIN tool requires an SSN or ITIN, but non-residents who have neither can still get an EIN by filing Form SS-4 with the IRS by fax or mail. On the form you simply write “Foreign” where a US tax number would go.

You do not need to travel to the US, and you do not need an ITIN first — Form SS-4 is the route for non-residents.

The steps

  • 1. Form your LLC (you need the company to exist first).
  • 2. Complete Form SS-4 with your company and responsible-party details.
  • 3. Submit by fax (faster) or mail to the IRS.
  • 4. Receive your EIN — usually a few business days to a few weeks by fax.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Entering an invalid tax number instead of writing “Foreign.”
  • Naming the wrong “responsible party” — it should be a real person who controls the company.
  • Applying before the LLC is actually approved.
